Street Survival School

Street Survival
Better Training for Better Drivers

The next GTA Street Survival School will be held on Sunday June 23rd (8:30AM-4:30PM) at CAA Centre (formerly Powerade), on Kennedy Rd in Brampton at a cost of only $95.00/per person.
Why should you care?
Do you have any kids, nieces or nephews, or grandkids you’d like to protect? Do you know anyone who’s had their driving license for 10 years or less? Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens and other drivers in their first 10 years of driving. This program is probably the best $95.00 you’ll ever spend; it could save the life of a loved one!
Don’t just take our word for it…
Enormous Support for this Program: The Street Survival School program has been running for 14 years in the US. It was founded by the BMWCCA Foundation and is generously sponsored by Tire Rack, Michelin and Enterprise Car Rental. There are now more than 100 of these schools across North America. The program has been offered in the GTA as a community service initiative by the Trillium BMW Club with the support of PCA-UCR since 2012, and with the sponsorship of Martin Merry and Reid Insurance. Together, that’s thousands of people who have volunteered their time or provided money to help save lives!
Past Participant Comments
This is what some recent students had to say about the program:

“Excellent opportunity for new drivers to drive the car close to its limits.”
“Awesome, amazing course!”
“Such a fantastic day – it will make me a better driver for sure.”
“Excellent experience – a must do for all drivers.”
“Great, safe environment to figure out car limits.”

But our absolutely favorite comments are when grads call us to tell us they avoided a collision because of what they learned on this course!
What Can a Student Expect?
This one-day program is a mixture of classroom and hands-on exercises with in-car coaches who are in their cars at all times. The driving is held on a closed, private course and safety is the highest priority. It’s a full day of training, that will help a driver become much more confident and safer on the street. The program goes beyond the curriculum taught by most beginner driving schools. It includes instruction in skid control on a slippery skid pad; lane change/accident avoidance manoeuvres; braking exercises; and a slalom course to learn about the importance of distance vision and weight transfer. Other elements include demonstrations/talks by police and/or emergency responders; transport truck visibility lessons; and air bag demonstrations. The challenges of driver distractions are also emphasized, such as the radio/CD/iPod, and of course the use of cell phones for talking or texting; And students are given an opportunity, in a safe environment, to experience the effects of these types of distractions on their skills.
Who Can Attend?
The program is designed for drivers with up to 10 years of driving experience. It is open to ANYONE in our community with a G2 or G license. There is no need to be a member of the BMW Club or Porsche Club. It is offered as a community service to club members and non-members alike.
What Car Should Students Use?
Students should use their daily driver or the family vehicle for the driving exercises, so they become familiar with how that particular vehicle responds to sudden and unexpected manoeuvres. That’s what will help them the most when driving on the street.
What Next?
This is an opportunity for you to get involved in one of two ways (or both):

  1. Sign up a loved one for the next course on June 23rd – it will be the best $95.00 you’ve ever spent!
  2. Come out to help – this is one of the many ways that Trillium & UCR serve the community!

Winter Go-Karts Series Complete

Yesterday was Trillium's final race for our 2019 Winter Go-Kart Series held at K1Speed Kartways in Downsview.  Great attendance numbers made for competitive racing at each of the Sunday evening events that started back in January. The racing was so fierce that often the time difference between the lead racer and 10th place was only 0.500s apart!  These are some of the most evenly matched karts we've experienced, which made for a legitimate ego-boost or humbling "no-excuse" evening among the participants.

Kudos to everyone that attended the competitive events, looking forward to another series in January 2020 (most likely at the same location). Results will be up on the Trillium site's forum page.
